Remembering Memorial Day - May 26, 2008 [May. 26th, 2008|11:42 am]

Flag at Arlington

Memorial Day commemorates the U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country.

We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies.

Moina Michael, Georgia educator (1869-1944)

Below is a Many-Eyes.com link. Using data visualization, we can better understand the number of lives lost in various U.S. wars.

Confederate Memorial Day
One of the first references to a U.S. Memorial Day was in 1867. A song was published, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet. The song carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead."
Here in Texas, we still commemorate the dead from the Civil War on January 19th.

Your Identity is Showing [May. 11th, 2008|10:32 am]
An IP (Internet Protocol) Address is a unique numerical address assigned to your computer and every other computer on the Internet. It's like your street address but for the World Wide Web.

You should know that your IP address is automatically shown to every website you visit, including this one. Even if you just view an image from a website, your IP is broadcast to that site. It shouldn't be a problem for you, but if it is, then you need inexpensive anonymous Internet browsing software.

Blog It, SuprGlue or RSS Feeds? [Apr. 26th, 2008|12:15 pm]
I'm testing this BLOG IT application on Facebook.

When I blog using BLOG IT, it automatically posts to six of my other blogs plus my Facebook minifeed and Twitter.

This is like a reversed SuprGlue, in which I post to any of six sites and they all show up on Garry's Blog via SuprGlue.

I think my RSS feeds might accomplish the same as either of the above, but I'm giving it a try.

Play with Gapminder.

It's a very special tool, expecially for viewing the world and worth the effort.

Are we ready for Generation Y? [Jan. 10th, 2004|05:42 pm]
[mood |impressedimpressed]

Today's 10 to 27 year olds number 73 million. This is Gen Y, and they're almost as large a demographic group as the 78 million Baby Boomers born between 1946 and 1964.

In 2015, the adult members of Gen Y will comprise 34 percent of the U.S. population. They will be the largest market segment in the United States.

Special Note: According to LiveJournal stats, the largest range of LiveJournal users are Gen Y'ers.

What's Your Law? [Jan. 8th, 2004|10:32 am]
[mood |chipperchipper]

Read the latest results of the 2004 Edge Annual Question . . . "What's Your Law?"

Read the latest 162 Laws received by Edge. They're related to scientific subjects and many are very valuable.

"There is some bit of wisdom, some rule of nature, some law-like pattern, either grand or small, that you've noticed in the universe that might as well be named after you. Gordon Moore has one; Johannes Kepler and Michael Faraday, too. So does Murphy."
John Brockman, Edge Publish and Editor
